A First in Nova Scotia ?

004    Having just watched a momentous rocket launch from SPACEX  of it's Falcon 9 Heavy  ( a first ) and the safe landing of the first 2 stages back at the Florida launch pads  I realize this is a day to remember .        My thoughts return to the seniors community we contemplate for our area .   Buildings that need little to no energy are almost a first  and are a first for a senior's home community in N.S.   and will join a very few within Canada .        We need to get our " society "  registered  and then apply to Ottawa for a non-profit tax registration .     This will allow for a continuing entity that will own the land and any assets that the residents don't own or lease .    Things like roads , underground services , solar electric panel array ,  common areas ( lawns , walkways )  and a pond to store rainfall and snow melt  so that water is available on site in case needed for a fire .      The initial society members will grow older and retire or p

Single dwellings , multiple dwellings or Apartments ?

  003.  Several years ago I held two local meetings to gauge the need and likes of seniors  as they consider moving to a less expensive life - less expensive than a large home that likely doesn't have many energy updates  yet attracts a hefty property tax bill , hefty heating bills and multiple chores like grass cutting and snow removal .         The consensus at that time was for a smaller stand alone home of about 750Sq. Feet .  One that was built to gather solar passive heating along with over code insulation  .    Climate information for this shore is virtually not existing  .    The closest on reccord gives us the Debert weather station history .   Our shore is very different as most already know .      One of the ways to gain that smaller home was by a Life Lease .   Pay a fixed amount prior to moving in and enjoy living there for as long as the senior(s) is / are living or able to live safely there .    When that time arrives the Lease is resold to someone on the wait lis
002  Near the end of 2016 I began erecting a base upon my two axle trailer in our back yard .  This was the start of building a " green house " wherein I could test and experiment with materials , including insulations , and observe what solar radiation through south facing windows would do if  this were a home or office or manufacturing plant .        Beginning spring 2017 as funding became available , I erected walls , added windows and doors plus a temporary roof .   As fall approached the partial erection of a large solar thermal panel was added on the south wall .          The structure box was aimed so that one side wall faced  toward  due south .   Soon I realized that early morning solar rays were much weaker than those later in the day as the sun rose .    I then moved the trailer so that the south wall faced 15 degrees to the west of due south .    This allowed solar energy to pass through the large south facing windows  for about an extra hour every day .   Th

Why Autumns Run - Jan 29, 2018

Autumns Run community for retired and senior folks on the North Shore of Nova Scotia, Canada . Why Autumns Run ?   Because many of us are in the Autumn of our lives . Autumn is usually a nice season  with nice scenery and weather most days .    I tried posting information on various Facebook sites but quickly determined that posts quickly got over run by subsequent posts arriving from the many other facebook sites that I watch .   Thus I will post updates and information on this site where they will sit until you look at them .      I've been wanting to get this Community established for several years  but there was always something in the way .   None of us are getting any younger so we better get on with the plan .  Already some that also wanted a safe community to live in have passed away or moved to Truro because there wasn't a local safe comfortable place to reside in .     I'm approaching that place .     Our home is too big and has too much land and isn'
